Series I:   Contains the formal reports, both Union and Confederate, of the first seizures of United States property in the Southern States, and of all military operations in the field, with the correspondence, orders, and returns relating specially thereto, and, as proposed is to be accompanied by an Atlas. In this series the reports will be arranged according to the campaigns and several theaters of operations (in the chronological order of the events), and the Union reports of any event will, as a rule, be immediately followed by the Confederate accounts. The correspondence, etc., not embraced in the "reports" proper will follow (first Union and next Confederate) in chronological order.

  • INDEX

NOTE ON USING THE INDEX: The index to this set is a bit convoluted due to the fact that the numbering sequence of the volumes is not consistent. Furthermore, the volumes in Series 1 are numbered 1-53, but there are in fact, 111 volumes in series 1 with some numbered as Volume #xx, Part #yy.

The Master Index runs to 1304 pages by itself, and indexes only to the volume level, not to the individual page within the volume and the volumes themselves run up to a thousand pages in length, so the finding of a particular item can be quite daunting. Broadfoot Publishing fixed the numbering problem, and indexed down to the page level with their edition of the O.R., but that index is still in copyright, and with the numbering system in this original edition, it's pretty much useless to refer to Broadfoot's Index. Cornell University has corrected this somewhat by sequentially numbering each volume 1-130 so that their numbering scheme now follows Broadfoot's, but the indexes in the actual volumes on line are to the originals.

None of this really matters if you want to read the entire set front to back (all 75,000 pages or so), but once you get the hang of things, the index that is available on line will at least put you in the neighborhood of what you're looking for.

One other caveat. Although the indexes in all volumes run to over 5,000 pages, they are not complete. Since this is almost completely made up of names, dates, places and events - all of which deserve to be in the index, a complete cross-referenced index would run to almost the same length as the set itself (75,000 pages), so I think we can safely say, that only about 10% of what is in the O.R. is indexed. A keyword search using the CD-ROM is the only effective way of finding the majority of the information, or to be relatively sure that a thorough search has been made.
