HISTORICAL NOTES:
At the outbreak of the Civil War Col. John P. Border raised seven companies in San Augustine, Nacog-doches, Sabine, and Shelby counties. They were formed together as Border's Battalion, and he was appointed lieutenant colonel of the unit. The battalion was later joined to Anderson’s battalion to form Thomas Scott Anderson's regiment, of which Border was lieutenant colonel. The date of this consolidation is unknown.
The Official Records make no mention of these units other than as a part of the Confederate Troops. Sometimes Border’s regiment is mentioned as being dismounted. The regiment participated in the Red River Campaign in early 1864 where they reported 564 men present for duty.
