Both the Union and the Confederacy wanted California because of its rich
mineral resources; its vital access to the Pacific Ocean; and the conquest would help the
Confederacy gain European recognition. The Confederates believed they could conquer
the region because citizens of New Mexico Territory, which then included both Arizona and
New Mexico, were pro-Southern.
