First Families
of
Bladen County
North Carolina

Bladen County was the "mother county" of North Carolina with 50 of the 104 counties in the state formed from the original Bladen County boundaries. By the time of the 1790 Census fully 3 generations had lived there as Bladen was formed from New Hanover County in 1732. Perhaps New Hanover should more properly be designated the "mother county."

In the deliberations surrounding the founding of Bladen County in 1732, the council stated that there were not more than 30 families in the county including the freeholders, Nathaniel Moore, Thomas Jones, and Richard Singletary. The other first families have not been determined.
