Our Southern Legacy
More important than ever in the 21st century

"Honor your father and mother,
that you may have a long life in the land
which the Lord, your God, is giving you."
Exodus 20:12

Faith and family, individual liberty and land are the core values which fill the heart, spirit and mind of the true Southerner.

Like a season of spring which never ends, Southern culture bursts with ever regenerating talents provided by our God through his people. Our beautiful and gracious women, rich musical repertoire, fine southern foods and recipes, distinct local dialects are just the most obvious aspects of the societal fabric known as Dixie. Southern hospitality is possibly the most world renown aspect of the Southern culture. The foundations for Southern hospitality can easily be attributed to the deep Christian faith of the South, (whose great commandment is to love thy neighbor) combined with a more relaxed view of the need to fill life with tasks whose sole motivation rests on the chase of silver and gold.

Southerners embrace a complete life, one whose focus begins with a reverence for God and recognition of the great gift of Jesus Christ. From this unimpeachable glorious foundation, the Southern family manifests on earth the love and order of God's heavenly eternity.

Written in large part by Southerners, the Constitution of the United States originally reflected both our Christian faith and our love of liberty. Remembering that democratic government can be as tyrannical as any monarchy, great care was taken to construct a constitution of limited and shared powers. The concepts of "consent of the governed" and "states' rights" were fundamental foundational ele-ments of the original governing document. However, the corrosive powers of greed, ambition and regional arrogance besieged the liberties of the individual and the constraints on government contained in the American constitution.

Ultimately, Southerners were forced to exercise the God given right of secession and then were forced to defend their democratic decision to establish a more perfect union against an invading foe pretending to be the carriers of the torch of self- governance. The sacrifices of our ancestors, their historic effort and noble conduct shine to this day as an example of the highest of commitment to faith, family, liberty and land.

After the late war we, the descendants of those noble soldiers clad in grey and butternut, were charged by General Stephen D. Lee, of Confederate States of America, to defend in perpetuity our Southern legacy:

To you the Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the Cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldiers' good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved, and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations."

The Rebel Mountain Reader is an attempt to meet the spirit of General Lee's charge. The stories told here tell only an infinitely small portion of their lives so noble, their sacrifices so wondrous.
