Wisconsin 9th Infantry Regiment


HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Wisconsin 9th Infantry Regiment was organized at Milwaukee, Wis., and mustered in October 26, 1861. It consisted predominantly of recent immigrants from German-speaking countries. It was ordered to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, January 22, 1862.

The 9th Wisconsin's commander and most of the regiment's personnel mustered out on December 3, 1864, upon expiration of their term of service. The remaining personnel were reorganized into a four-company independent battalion that remained in service in Arkansas until mustered out on January 30, 1866.

The 9th Wisconsin initially mustered 916 men and later recruited an additional 105 men, for a total of 1,021 men. The regiment lost 77 enlisted men killed in action or who later died of their wounds, plus another 114 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 191 fatalities.

Occupation of Newtonia October 4. Cane Hill November 28. Battle of Prairie Grove December 7. Expedition over Boston Mountains to Van Buren December 27-29. Guard and patrol duty at various points in Missouri until July, 1863. Ordered to St. Louis, Mo., July 8, and duty there until September 12. Ordered to Helena, Ark., September 12; thence moved to Little Rock October 10-22, and duty there until March, 1864. Reconnaissance to Burton October 26-November 1, 1863. Steele's Expedition to Camden March 23-May 3. Antoine or Terre Noir Creek April 2. Elkins' Ferry, Little Missouri River, April 3-4. Prairie D'Ann April 9-12. Jenkins' Ferry and Camden April 15.
