HISTORICAL NOTES:
The U.S. Colored Troops 9th Regiment Heavy Artillery was organized at Clarksville and Nashville, Tenn., October 8 to November 1, 1864. The regiment included a large number of recruits from Ohio — amounting to roughly 380 men who made up a battalion. Consisting of four companies (Companies A, B, C, and D) stationed primarily in Clarksville and Nashville, the unit was tasked with guarding key locations in the District of Nashville before being officially dissolved in May 1865. It was broken up May 5, 1865.
