HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Charleston Arsenal Battalion was composed of 333 workers and staff at the Charleston Arsenal, this unit was formed into five companies for local defense. Initially organized in Charleston, the battalion served to guard munitions and the facility. Just prior to the evacuation of Charleston in February 1865, the unit was redeployed to Columbia, South Carolina, where they remained until the end of the war.
OFFICERS:
Major John Timothy Trezevant.(1814-1887) was born in Southampton County, VA in 1814, the son of Dr. John Trezevant, a surgeon in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He moved to Memphis, TN in 1835, where he taught school until he passed the bar in Tennessee and served as an attorney in South Memphis. He also served two (2) terms as Mayor of South Memphis starting in 1849, and was one of the leaders to merge the town of South Memphis into the city of Memphis, TN. When the American Civil War began he joined the Confederate Army and was appointed Major in control of the Arsenal Department in the West. He was then transferred to Charleston, SC and given command of the Charleston Arsenal Battalion (SC)-Local Defense.
