Historical Notes:
The South Carolina 4th Infantry Regiment was organized at Anderson in March of 1861. It fought first at First Manassas under N. G. Evans where it had 11 killed, 79 wounded, and 6 missing. In April of 1862, the regiment had 450 men. If was consolidated into five companies and redesignated as the SC 4th Infantry Battalion. Company B became company D of the Palmetto Sharpshooters.
One flag survives in private hands and fragments from a second silk flag are in the SC Relic Room. Dedmondt also describes a third known flag.
