"My company was an existing volunteer company and was accepted as a volunteer company by the Governor of the State of South Carolina under the act of General assembly of said State, to provide an armed military force, on the 5th-day of January 1861 - on the 8th-day of April 1861 we were orderd to rendezvous at Charleston and served at Morris Island until the 23d day of April when by order of Governor Pickens we proceeded to Richmond Va. under Col. J. B. Kershaw
The Company was mustered into Confederate service at Camp Davis, near Richmond, Va., by John Scott, Captain, C. S. A., Mustering Officer, May 22, 1861.
The following muster rolls of the Company are available and from them the succeeding roster of the Company has been compiled; May 22, one later, but undated, June 30, 1861; January 8, May 1 and November 1, 1862; January 1, February 28, June 30, August 31, and November 1, 1863; February 29, April 30, and June 30, 1864.
The muster roll of November 1, 1862, contains the following "Record of Events":
"Left LeesBurg about 6th Sept., crossed Potomac, took a forced march to Harper's Ferry, assisted in capturing that Place, recrossed the Potomac again and early on the morning of 17th Sept. 1862, became engaged in Battle Sharp's Burg, Md, and on the night of 18th: Sept, crossed back to Shepherds Town, from there fell back to Martins Burg, thence to Winchester to our present encampment near Culpepper C H Va.
The muster roll of January 1, 1863, contained the following "Record of Events":
"The Company was engaged in the Battle of Fredericks Burg, Va. Dec. 13th: 1862 and the casualties have been noted opposite the names of the men who were killed or wounded."
The muster roll of February 28, 1863, contains the following "Record of Events":
"The camp was changed to its present position on the 10th of January 1863, from within three miles of Fredericksburg Va., to seven miles from Fredericksburg, Va."
The muster roll of August 31, 1863, gives the following "Record of Events":
"The Company was engaged in the Battle of Gettysburg Pa. July 2nd 1863 retreated on the 4th and arrived at Culpeper C. H. on the 25th day of July, 1863"
The muster roll of November 1, 1863, contains the following "Record of Events":
"Since last muster this Company left Va with a portion of Longstreet's corps about the 9th of Sept. 1863, and Joined Braggs Army of Tennessee about the 18th Sept. Participated in the Battle of Chickamauga Tenn. lost in action one officer and two men Killed -"
The muster roll of February 29, 1864, contains the following "Record of Events":
"Since last Report this Company left Chattanooga, on Nov. 4th, 1863 Marched to Knoxville Tenn. were Engaged skirmishing on the way - was Present at the storming of the works at Knoxville, Marched from Knoxville to Rogersville, participated in the Battle of Beans station Dec. 14th 1863 lost one man Killed & one wounded During the Months of January & Feb. nothing occurred, worth mentioning."
