Nott, Henry Junius ( - )

Henry served at an assistant surgeon in The 2nd Infantry Regiment.


Commissioned in State service, April 25, 1861; commissioned in Confederate service, May 1, 1861; reported on roster of January 17, 1862, as absent, sick; reported on muster rolls of August 31, and October 31, 1863 (the last available), as having been left with the wounded in Pennsylvania, July 4, 1863.

The obituary of his father, Dr. Josiah C. Nott below, states that Henry died at home of disease contacted in the army of the west.

Nott, MD, Josiah C.( - 31 MAR 1873)

Dr. Josiah C. Nott, formerly a distinguished Citizen of Columbia So. Ca., died at Mobile, Alabama on the 31st March 1873. The writer knew him when among us years now gone by.... [clipping from The Phoenix] "Dr. Josiah C. Nott, whose death on his sixty-ninth birth-day, at Mobile, Alabama, was announced in our despatches yesterday, was an eminent physician, and not without distinction as a literary man and author. He was a native either of Columbia or Union County, son of Judge Abraham Nott, of the Court of Appeals in this State, and brother of the accomplished Professor, Henry Junlus Nott, of the South Carolina College, who was lost on the steamer Home, off Cape Hatteras, in 1837 ... In connection with Mr. Gliddon, he produced and published a work "The Types of Mankind," which made no little noise in its day, in which the view of the diversity of origin of the human race was put forth and sustained with much ingenuity." [clipping from The South Carolinian] " ... In 1833, he removed to Mobile, with which city he became identified.... [from Mobile Register] Doctor Nott married, in 1832. Miss Sarah Deas, daughter of Colonel James S. Deas, of South Carolina, who during their absence in Europe removed to our city .... Of a numerous offspring, one son, his namesake remains along to his mother. J. Deas Nott fell at Chicamauga, Henry J. Nott died at home of disease contracted in the Army of the West; all the other perished in early life...."

J. Deas Nott is not listed in Broken Fortunes. Perhaps he served with an Alabama or other regiment. Dr. Nott served as a surgeon on Gen. Bragg's staff.
