1st Rhode Island Light Artillery Regiment (Battery H)
HISTORICAL NOTES:
Battery H, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery Regiment was organized in Providence, Rhode Island, under the authority of Governor William Sprague in the fall of 1862. They were formally mustered in on October 14, 1862. Equipped with 3-inch ordnance guns, the battery was initially stationed in the defenses encircling Washington, D.C., and served as an artillery camp of instruction. They were equipped with 3-inch ordnance rifles.
In 1865, the unit was ordered to join the Army of the Potomac, where they actively participated in the Siege of Petersburg from January to April.
The battery was mustered out on June 28, 1865, and officially discharged on July 3, 1865.
The unit suffered relatively light combat losses, recording 2 enlisted men killed and 10 dying from disease during their service.
