HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Ohio 20th Infantry Regiment was organized at Columbus, from Aug. 19 to Sept. 21, 1861, to serve for three years using the 3 months regiment as its nucleas. During the winter it was employed in guarding several batteries in the rear of Covington and Newport, Ky. In Feb., 1862, it participated in the battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee. It also participated in the battle of Shiloh, with considerable loss.
The 20th Ohio went on to participate in most of the battles leading up to and including Vicksburg, then followed the army to Tennesses and Georgia for the Georgia Campaign. It joined Sherman for the March to the Sea and the Carolinas’ Campaign, ending the war in North Carolina, then participated in the Grand Review in Washington, DC. It was mustered out on July 15, 1865.
