19th Maine Infantry Regiment


HISTORICAL NOTES: The 19th Regiment, Maine Infantry was organized at Bath,and mustered in August 25, 1862.

The total loss of the 19th Maine in the two days of fighting [at Gettysburg] were 12 officers and 220 men, almost 53% of the 19th. The regiment took into battle on the second day of July 440 officers and men."

The regiment absorbed the 5th Company of Unassigned Maine Infantry in November 1864.

They mustered out May 31, 1865, and were discharged June 7, 1865.

The Regiment lost during service 3 Officers and 189 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 182 Enlisted men by disease. Total 376. OFFICERS:

    The composite rosters of this regiment contain the names of 2856 men.

    The men who composed the Regiment came principally from the counties of Somerset, Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Knox and Lincoln. More came from the county of Waldo than any other one county. Practically all the men in companies B and E, three-fourths of Company D, and one-third of Company C, were residents of Waldo county. All the counties in the State, however, had representatives in the Regiment.     BIBLIOGRAPHY:
