2nd Regiment, Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade (Union)


Historical Notes HISTORICAL NOTES:
The 2nd Regiment, Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade was organized at Cumberland, Md., August 27 to October 31, 1861. It was primarily composed of volunteers from Maryland. It served as a home guard unit tasked with protecting the border areas of Maryland, particularly along the Potomac River, against Confederate incursions and guerrilla activities.

The Potomac Home Brigade consisted of several regiments raised from Maryland to serve in the defense of the Potomac River and the surrounding area. The 2nd Regiment, Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade, was one of the regiments within this brigade.

Under the command of Colonel William P. Maulsby, the 2nd Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade, participated in various operations and engagements throughout its service. The regiment was stationed in areas such as Maryland's Eastern Shore, the lower Potomac River, and parts of Virginia. The regiment conducted patrols, guarded key locations and infrastructure, and conducted expeditions to disrupt Confederate activities in the region. They also provided support and assistance to the local civilian population.

In addition to their defensive duties, the 2nd Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade, occasionally participated in larger military operations. In 1863, they took part in the Gettysburg Campaign, where they were engaged in skirmishes with Confederate forces during the Confederate invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The Regiment lost during service 1 Officer and 9 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 84 Enlisted men by disease. Total 94.
