HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Massachusetts 4th Infantry Regiment was originally organized as a 90 days unit.
The Regiment lost 1 enlisted man killed during its original 3 month service. A new 4th Massachusetts was formed for 9 months service in 1862 and served in the Western Theater.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Assigned to Major General Benjamin Butler’s Department of Virginia.

April 17 Left Boston under Colonel Abner B. Packard for Fortress Monroe, Va., on steamer State of Maine for three months service
April 20 Arrived Fort Monroe, fatigue and garrison duty

Battle of Big Bethel -
The 4th Massachusetts lost 1 man killed in one of the first skirmishes of the war, characterized by an overly complex plan and friendly fire incidents between units with different color uniforms.
