4th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry (3 months)


HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Massachusetts 4th Infantry Regiment was originally organized as a 90 days unit.

The Regiment lost 1 enlisted man killed during its original 3 month service. A new 4th Massachusetts was formed for 9 months service in 1862 and served in the Western Theater.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Assigned to Major General Benjamin Butler’s Department of Virginia. SERVICE:
  • April 17 Left Boston under Colonel Abner B. Packard for Fortress Monroe, Va., on steamer State of Maine for three months service
  • April 20 Arrived Fort Monroe, fatigue and garrison duty
  • May 22 Assigned to Major General Benjamin Butler’s Department of Virginia.
  • May 27 To Newport News
  • June 9-10 Movement on Great Bethel
  • June 10 Battle of Big Bethel - The 4th Massachusetts lost 1 man killed in one of the first skirmishes of the war, characterized by an overly complex plan and friendly fire incidents between units with different color uniforms.
  • July 15-17 Moved to Boston
  • July 22 Mustered out
