HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Indiana 40th Infantry Regiment was organized at Lafayette and Indianapolis, Ind., and mustered in December 30, 1861.
In February it moved to Bowling Green and Nashville with Buell's army, going thence to Alabama. At the time of Bragg's invasion of Kentucky, the 40th was stationed in southern Tennessee. When Buell moved into Kentucky the regiment marched to Nashville and proceeded with the army to Kentucky in pursuit of Bragg. It fought throughout the war in the west. Following the Atlanta Campaign and the pursuit of Hood to Nashville, the 40th was transferred to Ft. Lavaca Texas where it ended the war.
The Union Army gives loss by death, 312; desertion, 131; unaccounted for, 29. Dyer gives different numbers of 5 Officers and 143 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 5 Officers and 206 Enlisted men by disease. Total 359.
