HISTORICAL NOTES:
The 147th Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized at Indianapolis in March, 1865, and was composed of seven companies recruited in the 5th Congressional district, two from the 11th, and one composed of detachments from Benton, Henry and Fayette counties.
On the 13th of March, 1865, the regiment was mustered into service at Indianapolis, under the command of Col. Milton Peden.
Three days later the regiment left the capital for Harper's Ferry, Virginia. The distance is 533 miles, so it is likely they took a train for this trip. They marched 7 miles from Harpers Ferry to Charlestown, West Virginia where they were assigned to duty in the Army of the Shenandoah.
Their service, coming as it did at the end of the war, and occurring in the spring and summer, it is interesting that they had so many become ill and so many desertions. The records show that the regiment had 44 die from disease and had 63 desertions.
The 147th was mustered out on the 4th of August, 1865. The regiment arrived at Indianapolis August 11, 1865, with 32 officers and 743 men for final discharge.
