8th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry



HISTORICAL NOTES: The Eighth Regiment of Iowa Cavalry was organized under special authority of the War Department, bearing date April 6, 1863. The twelve companies of which it was composed were ordered into quarters by the Governor of the State, on dates ranging from August 13 to September 1, 1863. Davenport, Iowa, was designated in the order as the place of rendezvous, and there, on the 30th day of September, 1863, the twelve companies and their officers, together with the field and staff officers of the regiment, were-mustered into the service of the United States, by Lieutenant Colonel William N. Grier, of the Regular Army. At the date of its muster into the service, the regiment had an aggregate strength of 1,234 men in its camp, near Davenport, was given the name of "Camp Roberts," in official orders. OFFICERS:
