Capt. Hanleiter's Co. Georgia Light Artillery

Historical Notes:
The Jo Thompson Artillery was mustered into the service of the Confederate States, by Capt. Bomar, Quartermaster at Camp Stephens, on the 29th day of Sept. 1861. The corps was then known as the "Jo Thompson Lancers," and was commanded by Capt. L. J. Parr, 1st Lt. C. Hanleiter, 2nd Lt E. Craven, and 3rd Lt. Augustus Shaw. It became Company L of the Georgia 38th Infantry Regiment.

On Nov. 6th, 1861, Hanleiter's company, under Colonel Augustus R. Wright, received orders to proceed forthwith to Manassas. Their destination was changed to Savannah, which they reached on November 17. His regiment remained at Camp Bartow Georgia, until January 20, 1862, when they were ordered to a position on Skidaway Island. They stayed there until April 3, when the name of the camp was changed to Mercer, and removed to a point between Pembrook and Bonny Bell. This company was detached from the 38th Georgia and became Captain Hanleiter's Company Ga. Light Artillery (Jo Thompson Artillery,) June 10th, 1862. On June 5, Hanleiter's artillery company (he was Captain) was "detached from the Legion" and ordered to "Beaulieu," apparently nearer to Savannah. On December 20, 1864, Hanleiter's company was ordered into Charleston, South Carolina. On January 10, 1865, he passed through Charleston to a camp on James Island, but on January 14, his command was ordered back to Charleston.
