Hardwick Mounted Riflemen Cavalry Squadron

Historical Notes:
The Hardwick Mounted Rifles was formed in April 1862 by Captain Joseph L. McAllister in Bryan County, Georgia. Named for the nearby "lost town" of Hardwicke, they famously defended the Savannah river area and later merged into the 7th Georgia Cavalry Regiment.History and FormationOrganized in Bryan County in 1862, the unit initially served in the local defense of Savannah and the nearby Fort McAllister, which McAllister's family helped establish. In the spring of 1864, the Hardwick Mounted Rifles were consolidated with the 21st and 24th Georgia Cavalry Battalions to form the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Once established as part of the 7th Cavalry, the men were deployed to Virginia to fight in the Army of Northern Virginia. They engaged in the Wilderness Campaign and the battles around Cold Harbor. Later, they were sent back to Georgia to participate in the defense of Savannah, were dismounted, and eventually returned to Virginia to fight near Petersburg and Appomattox. Rosters:
