Annie Heloise Abel was born in Sussex, England in 1873 and emigrated to the United States when she was twelve. She She was one of the first thirty women in the United States to earn a PhD in history and was among the earliest professional historians to study he American Indian. One of the ablest historians of her day, Abel was an expert on the history of British and American Indian policies.
