3rd Colorado Cavalry.

Col. John M. Chivington, commanding the district of Colorado, reported to Maj.-Gen. S. R. Curtis on Oct. 10: "Capt. Nichols, 3rd Col. volunteer cavalry, surprised and killed 10 Indians, Cheyennes ; captured 11 ponies and I mule this morning near Valley Station."
