Alabama 1st Infantry Battalion (Loomis)


HISTORICAL NOTES: The 1st Battalion, Alabama Infantry (Loomis') was organized under Lt. Col. John Q. Loomis and was combined with McClellan's 6th Infantry Battalion to form the 25th Alabama Infantry Regiment in December 1861. The unit served on the Gulf Coast (Pensacola) before transitioning to the 25th Regiment. OFFICERS:
  • Colonel John Q. Loomis. A South Carolina native and Wetumpka lawyer, Loomis served in the Mexican–American War before commanding the Wetumpka Light Guards. Loomis was wounded at Shiloh and again at Murfreesboro (Stones River), ultimately resigning in September 1862.
