Historical Notes:
The 43rd Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio, and mustered into service on August 16, 1861, under the command of Colonel William L. Pierson.
The 43rd spent the entire war in the west, beginning at New Madrid, Mo, and Vicksburg. It participated in the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign, ending the war at Bentonville, North Carolina. It was mustered out July 13, 1865.
Siege of Corinth (April-May 1862). The 43rd Ohio took part in the Siege of Corinth, an operation aimed at capturing the strategic railroad junction of Corinth, Mississippi.
Tullahoma Campaign (June-July 1863): The 43rd Ohio participated in this campaign in Tennessee, which saw Union forces under General William S. Rosecrans advance against Confederate positions.
Chickamauga Campaign (August-September 1863): The regiment was involved in the Chickamauga Campaign in Georgia, which culminated in the Battle of Chickamauga, one of the deadliest battles of the war.
Chattanooga Campaign (October-November 1863): The regiment took part in the Chattanooga Campaign, including the Battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge.
Atlanta Campaign (May-September 1864): The 43rd Ohio participated in the lengthy and hard-fought campaign to capture Atlanta, Georgia.
March to the Sea (November-December 1864): The regiment marched with General William T. Sherman from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia, as part of his famous "March to the Sea."
Carolinas Campaign (February-April 1865): The 43rd Ohio saw action in the campaign that moved north through the Carolinas, leading to the surrender of Confederate forces.
The Ohio 43rd Infantry Regiment was mustered out of service on June 24, 1865, in Louisville, Kentucky.
The regiment lost a total of 256 men during service; 4 officers and 61 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 2 officers and 189 enlisted men died of disease.

Colonel Wager Swayne - commanded the regiment following Kirby Smith's death.
