3rd Regiment, Virginia Light Artillery (Local Defense)
HISTORICAL NOTES:
An entry in the executive minutes book, March 5, 1862 states that the Governor had appointed and commissioned Col. John C. Porter, Lt. Col. John C. Shields and Maj. James B. Dorman, as officers of the 2nd Regiment of Artillery, for manning the batteries around Richmond. Apparently Colonel Porter's 2nd Regiment was re-designated as the 3rd Regiment, as there was already in existence a 2nd Rgt. Va. Hvy Artillery, serving in the Richmond defenses, under Col. Robert Tansill. Colonel Porter's regiment, organized on March 5, 1862, was comprised of ten companies. On April 19, 1862, by S.O. No. 90, A&IGO, the 3rd Rgt. Was ordered to Hanover Junction to await orders from Brig. Gen. Charles W. Field, commanding near Fredericksburg
The regiment was broken up in May 1862, by the operation of the conscription act. The members who re-enlisted were assigned to various other organizations.

Company F was reorganized as cavalry and became a part of the 2nd (Pate's) Bn. Va. Cav., which finally became Co I, 5th Rgt. Va. Cav Co K was reorganized as Captain Bossieux's Co. Va. Inf., Local Defense Troops, and finally as Co F. 25th (Richmond City) Bn. Va. Inf., Local Defense Troops.
