HISTORICAL NOTES:
NOTE: Dates on the creation of the Texas 8th Infantry Regiment differ from late 1861 to February 1863.
Reuss's Indianola Artillery Guard and the 8th Texas Infantry Batallion consolidated on December 10, 1861, to form the Texas 4th Artillery Battalion (Shea's Artillery Battalion). The men were primarily from Bexar, Goliad, Guadalupe, Nueces, Refugio, and Victoria counties. Company A was organized by assignment of Shea's Artillery Battery under Capt. Daniel D. Shea and Capt. John A. Vernon, and Company B was organized by assignment of the Indianola Artillery Guards Artillery Battery under Capt. Joseph M. Reuss.
The Texas 8th Infantry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 by consolidating the 8th Texas Infantry Battalion and Shea's Texas Artillery Battalion. I have found no details on the 8th Infantry Battalion. The unit contained one cavalry, four infantry, and five artillery companies, and served in the Trans-Mississippi Department.
