RUTLEDGE
RUTLEDGE, Benjamin Huger, Colonel, Fourth SC Cavalry Regiment, Butler's
Brigade, Hampton's Division, ANVA.
Request any detail on the engagements of the 4th SC Cav. and any information on Col. Rutledge, who was my great-grandfather.
particularly anything other than the Battle of Trevilian Station, Va. which is subject of book in my possession.
Also anything about post-war reconstruction troubles in SC, during which Col. Rutledge was asked by the governor to raise troops to keep order
between the Santee and Savannah rivers.
Editor Please Note: Trevilian Station, the largest cavalry battle of the war is not mentioned in the list of engagements in which the 4th SC Cavalry took part.
It should be listed as it was strategically important as well as a BIG battle in which some 3000 troops were either killed or wounded. See book by Col. Walbrook Swank Davis , published by Burf St. Press, Shippenburg, PA.

RODDY
My great-greatgradfather, William Pinckney RODDY enlisted as a private in Co. F, 16th Reg. SC Inf. on 1 Feb 1863 at Camp Perry for a 12 month period. His records indicate that he was present for the months of Feb - Dec of 1863. He was the brigade wagoneer by order of General Gist. On Feb 1, 1864, he re-enlisted for 3 years of the period of the war. From Jan - August of 1864 was was listed as the brigade wagoneer or was present at muster. There is a record that we was the subject of a court martial on 13 July 1864 (G. O. 49/19) while with the Army of Tennessee. There is another record that indicates that during the months of October and November 1864, he was on a roll of non-commissioned officers and privates employed on extra duty at Chickamuaga, Tenn. He was employed as a teamster. His next record (Muster Roll) indicates that he was a private in Co. A of 16th and 24th Consolidated and was paroled at Greensboro, NC on 1 May 1865. At this time he was a member of the Infirmary Corps. My question is: How can I find out what G. O. 49/19 is and review the record? Evidently he was not court martialed as he was with the 16th until he was parolled.

COLTHARP
I would like to know how common it was for CW soldiers to enlist in several unit--from different states. I have a real puzzle here that I need some "expert" help on! Three Coltharps are listed in a roster of the 6th SC Reg't. Co. B which was drawn primarily from the Fort Mill area in York Co. SC.
Brantly Coltharp
H. T. Coltharp
John Coltharp
I think the three are brothers from the Fort Mill area, H. T. being Henry Thornton. But I also find an H.T. Coltharp who enlisted 13 Sept 1861 in a unit raised in Mecklenbug NC--which is just across the state line from Fort Mill SC. I think this is the same H.T. Coltharp who is listed in the 6th SC.
There is also a Brantley Coltharp who served in 2nd MS, Co. B along with two other Coltharps, first cousins of the York Co. SC Brantley, John C. and Matthew Newton Coltharp from Tippah Co. MS. Brantley died 17 Sept,1862, after 2nd Manassas, and is buried at Warrenton VA as a member of 2nd MS. On a roster of 2nd MS, he is listed as born in SC and his "mortal wound" is mentioned in a company diary. I think this is the same Brantley Coltharp who is listed in 6th SC. As far as I know there was only one Btantley Coltharp, b. 14 Mar 1837 in Fort Mill, York Co. SC.
So how might all these double enlistments have occurred? Can someone enlighten me on the process?
