John Matthew SIMMONS was born in Colleton Co SC. He joined , Company I 2nd Regiment SC Volunteers, Fort Sumter Garrison, injured at Battle of Olustee FL(!), resident of Pritchardville SC for 52 years, d Savannah GA 2 May 1926 at the home of his
niece, Mrs. John Lewis HUNT in Savannah GA, A description of his CW service (in a 1926 Savannah GA newspaper article) was from Col T. Savage HEYWARD of Savannah GA/Beaufort SC. He was described as a hero at Fort Sumter (involved spreading grease fire on the waters near Union ships).
