Major Wm. D. Peck, died in Col'a So. Ca. April 26, 1870. Thus has passed away, a young man in early life. He was born in Columbia, some thirty years ago, has been a popular and useful citizen, discharging faithfully in public life many trusts and was generally esteemed by his fellow men... He was an obedient son, affectionate as husband and father....
Peck, William D., enlisted in the 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry - Co. C. at Morris's Island, for State duty, April 24, 1861; elected 3rd Lieutenant, May 21, 1861. Elected from 1st Sergeant, May 21, 1861; mustered into Confederate service, May 23, 1861; appointed Quartermaster, July 20, 1861. The roster of the Field, Staff and Band for the 2nd Regiment has a note that William was appointed Major on July 20, 1861.
