They were both descendants (grandson and great-grandson) of Dr. John Lining (1708-1760), a physician and scientist in Charleston SC, who was well-known for his studies of human metabolism, weather, and yellow fever.
Dr. Thomas Lining, Sr., M.D., born 10 Feb 1799 in Charleston SC, died 22 Jul 1868 in Whistler AL. He was a surgeon in both the U.S. Army and the Confederate Army.

Dr. Charles Edward Lining was the sone of Dr. Thomas Lining, Sr., MD. He was a surgeon in both the U.S. Navy and the Confederate Navy and supposedly sailed on the Shenandoah. Moved to Paducah KY after the Civil War.
