William enlisted at Morris's Island, for State duty, April 24, 1861; mustered into Confederate service, May 23, 1861; promoted to 4th Corporal, June 4, 1861. Promoted from 4th Corporal to 1st Sgt. between October 1, and December 31, 1861; died at Camp Camden, Va., of typhoid fever, February 3, 1862. The name is spelled Howle on the unofficial compilation.
