According to the Colquitt County, GA Confederate Roster, John was a member of Co. K of the 19th SC Volunteer Infantry. His name does not appear on the roster however which was prepared by Capt. John B. Courtney. There was also a Jabez Courtney who was a member of the company. Both a John Courtney and a Jabez Courtney were members of Company H of the 19th.
In 1903, John lived in Colquitt County, GA. A Cross of Honor marks his grave.
