Cantey, Gen. James (?? - 30 JUN 1874)
Gen'l James Cantey died near Fort Mitchell Ala. June 30th 1874. The writer knew him not. The notice of his death in the Columbia Phoenix is hereto attached. [clipping] "General James Cantey, whose death on the 30th ult., near Fort Mitchell, Alabama, has been announced, was a native of Camden, in this State, and son of a well-known citizen of that place - Major John Cantey. He was a graduate of the South Carolina College, in the class of 1837. While acting as Adjutant of the Palmetto Regiment, in Mexico, he was desperately wounded in one of its charges on Churubusco... He went into the war between the States in command, as its Colonel, of the 15th Alabama Regiment ...."
