Ulmer, John Gordon, M.D. (1 SEP 1890 - ??)
After the most careful preparation in the public schools and colleges of his native State, South Carolina, Dr. Ulmer completed his medical education and soon afterwards established himself in the general practice of this profession at Hemingway. Here he has continued to be thus engaged with marked success ever since and today he ranks as one of the best known and most able physicians of this section of South Carolina. He is a member of several fraternal and medical organizations and is also actively interested in religious work.
John Gordon Ulmer was born at Brunson, Sebpember 1, 1890, a son of Henry Martin and Jane Elizabeth (Free) Ulmer. His father was a farmer and a veteran of the War Between the States during which he served as a captain in the Confederate Army under General John B. Gordon, being wounded in the second battle of Bull Run. It was in honor of his commanding general that his son was named, John Gordon. Dr. Ulmer received his early education in the public grammar and high schools of Brunson and, after having been graduated from the local high school in 1915, he attended the College of Charleston, from which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science in medicine. He then took up the study of medicine in 1918 at the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, graduating from that institution with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1922. After serving for one year as an interne at the Roper Hospital in Charleston, Dr. Ulmer came to Hemingway in 1923. Since then he has continted to practice in Hemingway, his practice being of a general nature. He is a member of the South Carolina Medical Society and of the American Medical Association, as well as of Indiantown Lodge, Ancient Free Masons, and of the Junior Order United American Mechanics. In politics he is a supporter of the Democratic party, while his religious affiliations are with the Baptist Church. Those of Mrs. Ulmer are with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
At Hemingway, August 31, 1924, Dr. Ulmer married Ruth Gasque Harmon, a daughter of Roswell Thomas and Mary Pauline (Gasque) Harmon. Dr. and Mrs. Ulmer have one son, John Gordon Ulmer, Jr.
