B(arnwell) BEARD enlisted in the Confederate Army June 15, 1862 in Colleton Co. by A. Campbell for a period of 3 years. Found on the Muster Roll of
Co. K, 11th Reg't.
(9th S.C. Vol.) South Carolina Infantry as a Private, and also served
Co. B 3rd SC Cavalry
(also known as 2nd SC Cavalry and Colcock's - formerly 8th Batt'l. SC Cav.). Late in the war he deserted. Family said he was tired of fighting and worried so much about his family that he went back home and lived in the woods/swamp near his home until the war was over!

J. W. was a member of the
11th Infantry Regiment Reserves - Company L.
He is buried in Colston Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Barnwell.

Beard, John (?? - 14 DEC 1863)
John Beard, of Col'a So. Ca. died near Rogersville, Tenn. Dec. 14, 1863 of Pneumonia. He was engaged in carrying supplies to the soldiers in the Army of Gen'l Longstreet, and fell a martyr in his Country's cause. His body was removed to Col'a So. Ca. and buried in that city March 3d, 1864.

Percy A. Beard died in Col'a So. Ca. Sep'tr 30th 1877. He was a most excellent young man... [clipping] "The first citizen soldier who has been buried with military honors in Columbia since the war was laid away in Elmwood yesterday by the Richland Volunteer Rifle Company and the Phoenix Hook and Ladder Company. Percy Beard, who died of consumption at his mother's residence on Saturday night... The funeral sermon was preached at the Marion Street Methodist Church...." [also a tribute of respect from the Richland Volunteer Rifle Company]
