Two Whitfield Brooks are listed as privates: one in the 2nd Artillery Regiment - Co. K and the other, in the 6th Cavalry Regiment - Co. B was killed at the battle of Travillian station.
Mr's Mary P. Brooks, widow of the late Col. Whitfield Brooks, mother of the late Hon'ble Preston S. Brooks, and sister of Chancellor Carroll, all of them men, known and loved [page 237] and honored in South Carolina, departed this life at her residence near Ninety Six, on Wednesday Dec. 14, 1870, aged Seventy years.
