April 6, 1864 - April 30, 1865. Service in Virginia including the Petersburg campaign and surrender at Appomattox Court House. While on leave in South Carolina late in 1864, Hinson helped his father hide the family silver, crockery, and wine from the approaching Yankees. Back on duty in Virginia, he worried until he heard from the family that the danger was past. During the chaotic evacuation of Richmond he saw the fires that had been set, observed crowds of women weeping at the soldiers' departure and othe women pillaging, and the soldiers' skulking and deserting. At Appomattox he could scarcely believe that a horseman was carrying a small white flag. "My pencil almost refuses to write the disgrace, many an iron souled veteran burst into tears..." (p. 119) he felt "... broken down physically and mentally..." (p. 119) His unit quickly disbanded and he described his traumatic return home. "I feel as if I am one of a disgraced army and unable to control myself at meeting my family under such circumstances." (p. 120)
