Fewell served in the 17th Infantry Regiment and several militia units. He describes service in the defense of Charleston and the Petersburg Campaign. He mentions daily food rations, the procurement of cloth to make uniforms, and the effects of the Charleston fire of December 11, 1861. He seldom reported news of the fighting; Fewell told his family that they could obtain that information from the newspapers. At Petersburg, however, he said he was building bomb proof shelters; sleeping on the dead black troops that had been killed and buried at the "Crater"; and getting used to bullets and bombs, but not the shelling. Fewell worried about Martha Fewell's pregnancy, but referred to it delicately as her sickness. Letters from Martha contain news of the crops, reports of the high prices of food and slaves - (in 1864 male slaves were selling for as much as $1,500 and girls $1,300) - and messages. "Children and negroes send howdy to you." (p. 28) During the summers of 1862 through 1864, he returned to Ebenezer to work his four hundred acre farm with its seventeen slaves.
