James reports on battles from Virginia including first Bull Run and Tennessee. From Charleston he reported that the spirits were so high following the capture of Ft. Sumter that "it is firmly believed that we will have Washington in less than a month." (p. 2) Immediately after the Peninsular campaign, however, he wrote, "I hope the fighting is ended. Oh for peace how I long for this war to end and that is the wish of all the whole army and all the yankees that I see say that they are tired of this war and that their whole army wants it to end if it was left to the Soldiers we would soon have peace." (p. 94)

Tucker, Glenn. Chickamauga - Bloody Battle in the West Morningside Bookshop. 1984. 437 pages with extensive bibliography and index. This is an excellent account of the Battle of Chickamauga.
