When David Harris of Spartanburg County, South Carolina went to war, his wife managed their estate and continued this farm journal. Raising seven children and facing such farm problems as restive slaves and deserters who stole liberally left Emily feeling overburdened. She hated the war so much that she regretted one Confederate victory because it prolonged the inevitable defeat. A brief respite from anxiety occurred when David returned late one night on a furlough. She wrote, "After we all had hugged and kissed our best friend, we raised a light to gaze upon and scrutinize the beloved features which had begun to be something belonging to the past... his arrival has dispelled all gloom for the present." (p. 392) Following the war, David resumed the journal and the intimate thoughts of an interesting and sensitive woman slipped back into oblivion.
