Mississippi 3rd Infantry Battalion ~ Hardcastle's later William's

Historical Notes:
The Mississippi 33rd (Hardcastle's) Infantry Regiment [including the 3rd (Hardcastle's) Mississippi Infantry Battalion] was organized during the late spring of 1862. In June it was stationed at Grenada and totaled 669 men and 397 condemned muskets. During the next month there were 31 officers and 475 men, and later it was redesignated the 45th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. Later in the war it was consolidated and renamed as the 3rd (Williams) Infantry Battalion.

The 3rd (Williams') Infantry Battalion, formerly the 45th Mississippi Regiment, was organized in July, 1864 with five companies. This unit served in General Lowrey's and Sharp's Brigade and fought with the Army of Tennessee from Peach Tree Creek to Bentonville . In the Battle of Atlanta it reported 2 killed, 33 wounded, and 2 missing, and many were lost in Tennessee. The battalion surrendered on April 26, 1865.

  • Company G - (Mississippi Volunteers) - raised in Pontotoc County
  • Company K [sic] - (Capt. Charlton’s Independent Company) - raised in Hinds County

    COMPANIES COMPRISING THE 45TH MISSISSIPPI INFANTRY: The 45th Regiment Infantry was made up of the companies of the 3rd Battalion listed above; and in addition to companies H and I below:

  • Company H - (Capt. Roberts’ Company) [27th Alabama Infantry] - raised in Alabama
  • Company I - (Capt. Wright’s Company) [27th Alabama Infantry] - raised in Alabama
