The skirmish known as the Battle of Natural Bridge was the culmination of a small Union navy/army expedition from South Florida to the area south of Tallahassee. From the time the first Union troops landed near the St. Marks Lighthouse till the Battle of Natural Bridge, there were several other smaller engagements along the way... near the lighthouse, at the East River bridge, at the St. Marks River bridge at Newport... and perhaps other places. What follows is an attempt to identify to the extent possible, all Union and Confederate units involved in these clashes, and to list the known members of these units. This effort is slightly complicated by the fact that not all companies of the 2d U.S. Colored Troops and the 2d Florida Cavalry Regiment (Union) on the Union side, were present; and that not all companies of the 2d Florida Cavalry Regiment (Confederate) were present. Further, some of the Confederate forces present appear to have been unorganized militia and miscellaneous individual "volunteers". In any case, it is known that detachments from those companies present were left behind at Cedar Key by the 2d U. S. Colored Troops and the 2d Florida Cavalry Regiment (Union) and it is very likely, especially given the speed with which they were rushed to the scene, that not all members of those Confederate units represented were present .
