Historical Notes:
The South Carolina 3rd Infantry Regiment, organized at Columbia, South Carolina, in April, 1861, contained men recruited in the counties of Laurens, Colleton, Pickens, Spartanburg, and Newberry. Ordered to Virginia, it saw action at First Manassas in Bonham's Brigade. Later the 3rd was placed in General Kershaw's, Kennedy's, and Conner's Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Gettysburg, then moved to Georgia with Longstreet. After fighting at Chickamauga and Knoxville, it returned to Virginia and continued the conflict at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. Later it was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and North Carolina Campaign. In April, 1862, this regiment totalled 550 effectives. It reported 23 killed, 108 wounded, and 4 missing at Savage’s Station, had 14 killed and 35 wounded of the 371 at Maryland Heights, and lost 11 killed, 71 wounded, and 2 missing of the 266 at Sharpsburg. The unit lost 163 at Fredericksburg, 12 at Chancellorsville, and twenty-one percent of the 406 at Gettysburg. Its last battle was at Bentonville where 1 was killed and 15 were wounded, and on March 23, 1865, there were 191 present for duty. It surrendered on April 26.
At the surrender at Appomattox, E. E. Smith, Co. K is listed with
some men of the 39th Va. Cavalry.

Eli Thomas Stackhouse - He commanded the 8th South Carolina. At the consolidation of the 3rd, 8th, and 3rd South Carolina Battalion on April 9, 1865, he took command of 3rd South Carolina. Paroled at Greensboro May 2, 1865.

Benjamin Conway Garlington -Elected at reorganization May 13, 1862. No record of who held this office between March 1 and May 13, 1862. Killed at Savage Station June 29, 1862.
William Drayton Rutherford-Promoted July 1, 1862. Promoted to colonel May 6, 1864. Robert Clayton Maffett-Promoted May 6, 1864. Captured at Halltown August 26, 1864. Died at Ft. Delaware Prison April 26, 1865, the day that General Johnston surrendered. Rutherford Pressley Todd- Promoted October 13, 1864. Paroled at Greensboro May 2, 1865. Apparently no one filled this position except on at acting basis until Todd was promoted on October 13th.
