The Company was mustered into the service of the Confederate States, at Camp Davis, near Richmond, Va., by John Scott, Captain, C. S. A., Mustering Officer, May 23, 1861, for a term of twelve months from May 22, 1861.

The following "Record of Events" is entered on the muster roll of January 1, 1863:
"This company crossed the Shenandoah River on its March from above Winchester to Culpepper on the first day of November. On the 3rd - Nov. it camped Near Culpepper. On the 18th it began the march to Fredericksburg and reached the vicinity of that city on the 20th Nov. It was engaged in the battle of Fredericksburg of the 13th Dec., being stationed at the foot of Mary's Hill."

Beck, Charles Jones (born January 28, 1843), promoted from 2nd Sergeant between October 8, and 16, 1863; reported on muster roll of November 1, 1863, as having escaped from the enemy and being on his way to the Company; reported on muster roll of May 1, 1864, at present; on last available muster roll (July 1, 1864) as present. Mr. Beck, who survives, says that when he was wounded he was sent to the Black Horse Hospital, the Confederate general hospital, near Gettysburg and was there when the hospital fell into the hands of the enemy just after the battle. After five weeks he was moved to a Federal hospital camp beyond Gettysburg. About September 2, 1863, he and Thomas Paysinger, of the 3rd Regiment, S. C. V., plotted to escape. They went to dinner but pretended not to care for anything to eat and left the mess. They then approached a sentinel near the camp graveyard and asked permission to visit the grave of an alleged brother of Mr. Paysinger whom they said had just died. The sentinel gave the permission and as soon as his back was turned they jumped the fence into the woods and took to their heels and made good their escape. They separated at Richmond, and Mr. Beck made his way to Columbia. After five weeks at home he joined his regiment in Tennessee in time to participate in the Knoxville campaign.
