It is not known where from where in the state these men were mustered. The notes with the roster indicate they were organized in Virginia.
Company I was mustered into Confederate service at Richmond, Va., by Thomas T. Grayson, 2nd Lieutenant, C. S.A., Inspector and Mustering Officer, September 7, 1861. Most of the men were enlisted in Virginia by Captain Boag, "for the war".

The Daily News (Charleston), of November 13, 1867, published a partial list of South Carolina soldiers who had died while prisoners of war at Elmira, N. Y. the list had been furnished by John H. Leavitt, of Elmira. The graves were said to be marked by headboards. The death of J. King, Co. I, 1st S. C., was given as having occurred September 12, 1864.
