The New York 182nd Infantry Regiment, Col. Mathew Murphy, was organized as the first regiment of the Corcoran Brigade, in New York city, in August, 1862, largely of members of the 69th Regiment of the National Guard of the State, returning from their three months' service as such. November 17, 1862, the organization of the regiment — Sixty-ninth National Guard Artillery — was completed at Newport News, Va., by adding to it the men enlisted for the sixth regiment of the Corcoran Brigade, except those of Company D. The reorganized regiment was mustered in the service of the United States for three years November 17, 1862, at Newport News, Va., and the companies were recruited principally in New York city. March 21, 1864, the War Department gave the regiment the designa-tion, 182d Regiment N. Y. Volunteers.
The regiment left the State November 10, 1862; it served at Newport News, Va., from November, 1862; in Corcoran's Brigade, Peck's Division, Department of Virginia, at Suffolk, from December, 1862; in Murphy's Brigade, Corcoran's Division, 7th Corps, from March, 1863; in 1st Brigade, King's Division, 22d Corps, defenses of Washington, from July 16, 1863; in 2d Brigade, 3d, Tyler's, Division, 22d Corps, from December, 1863; in 2d Brigade, Tyler's Division, 22d Corps, from January, 1864; in the 4th Brigade, 2d Division, 2d Corps, from May 17, 1864; in the 2d Brigade, 2d Division, 2d Corps, from June 26, 1864; and it was mustered out and honorably discharged, under Lieut.-Col. John Coonan, July 15, 1865, near Washington, D. C.
During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 5 officers, 55 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 3 officers, 24 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 53 enlisted men; total, 8 officers, 132 enlisted men; aggregate, 140; of whom 15 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy.
