Historical Notes:
The Nineteenth Regiment was assigned to the Second Congressional District, to be recruited in the counties of Branch, St.Joseph, Cass, Berrien, Kalamazoo, Van Buren and Allegan. It's camp was at Dowagiac, with the Honorable Henry Gilbert as the commandant of the camp, who was charged with the organization of the regiment.
Recruiting was commenced on July 15,1862, and was completed on September 5,1862. The Regiment broke camp on September 14th., and under the command of Colonel Gilbert, took its route to Cincinnati with 995 officers and men. It was assigned to the 1st. division of the Army of the Ohio, and was stationed in Kentucky during the months of October, November and December.
The Regiment lost during service 7 Officers and 88 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 160 Enlisted men by disease. Total 255.
