HISTORICAL NOTES:
The 1st Maine Cavalry Regiment was organized at Augusta and mustered in November 5, 1861. Seven of the companies of the 1st Regiment, District of Columbia Cavalry, (Companies D, F, G, H, I, K and L) transferred to the 1st Regiment, Maine Cavalry, on August 27, 1864. The original members were mustered out on November 25, 1864 when their service was up, but later recruits, along with members of the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry and those who chose to reenlist, were retained in the regiment until its mustering out at Petersburg, Virginia on August 1, 1865.
This Regiment lost greatest number killed in action of any Cavalry Regiment in the entire army: 15 Officers and 159 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded; 3 Officers and 341 Enlisted men died of disease, a total of 518.
