Corbin's Men, Kentucky

Historical Notes:
This command appears to have consisted of about 148 men who had been recruited in Kentucky between July 3 and 29, 1862, by Marion Corbin, who was a 1st Lieutenant Company B, 1st Battalion, Kentucky Cavalry. Corbin and about 113 of his men were captuered July 29, 1862 at Mt. Sterling, while on their way to Virginia. They appear to have been released about December 8, 1862 near Vicksburg, Miss., but no evidence has been found to show they ever joined the organization for which they had been recruited - the 1st Battalion Ky. Cav. A number however appears to have subsequently served in Company B, Jessie’s Battalion, Kentucky Mounted Rifemen, composed of Independent Companies.

Affidavit of Marion Corbin

Marion Corbin being duly sworn doth depose and say. That he is thirty four years of Age, that his residence is in Boone County, Kentucky. That hs is a Lieutenant in Captain John G. Scott’s Company in Shankin’s Cavalry, that Shankin’s Cavalry was organized in Prestonbourgh, Kentucky and mustered into service of the Confederae States and ordered to Virginia.

That on the 3rd day of July depment [sp?] when in Tazwell County, Virginia was ordered by Captain Scott, approved by Major Shankin and General Williams to recruit a company of Cavalry in Kentucky for the Confederate Service.

That he recruited one hundred and forty eight men. That he has heard them called Corbin’s Band, and Corbin’s Guerilas, but the department never gave them any such name.

That he was captured with about one hundred and thirteen men at Mount Sterling, Kentucky who are now at the ??????? Depot. And further he depseth [sp?] sayeth not. /s/ Marion Corbin
